Hunting for a great dressy t-shirt for work or a work-appropriate tee? We've rounded up our favorites.

The post The Hunt: Work-Appropriate T-Shirts appeared first on Corporette.com.

Sure, we all know what basics professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

We just rounded up stylish blouses for work, but I thought we’d take a look at that other versatile layering piece: work-appropriate T-shirts, aka business casual T-shirts for women, dressy T-shirts for work, or your basic layering tees.

Which are the best tees for layering under blazers, cardigans, and more? What qualities do you look for in a work-appropriate T-shirt, how many do you own, and how long do you expect your tees to stay looking new? In general, what do you think are the most office-appropriate T-shirt styles?

{related: do check out our regularly updated list of wardrobe essentials for work!}

Looking for the best work-appropriate T-shirts? As of 2024, some of our favorite dressy T-shirts for work are from Amazon Essentials, Theory, Everlane, J.Crew, Banana Republic, and Vince — also check our posts on opaque white tees and the best plus-size tees for work!

Why Work-Appropriate T-Shirts are a Wardrobe Essential

Business casual T-shirts are great for days when the temperature is in flux (or the office radiator is on the attack), as well as a way of injecting some color into your wardrobe to mix up the sea of neutral basics.

Try them belted, tucked, untucked, or layered (I especially like a simple tee under a suit), and remember — if you’re wearing them to work, T-shirts should be in impeccable condition.

They’re also generally very easy to care for — typically machine washable, and they generally don’t require ironing. (As a bonus, if you wear a T-shirt as a layering piece underneath a blazer or a sweater, it can help you save on your laundering needs for the piece layered on TOP as well, because the T-shirt will catch most of your body sweat.)

{related: stylish tops for under suits}

What to Look For in a Great Business Casual T-Shirt for Women

In my mind, the perfect work T-shirt:

 • is opaque
 • is thick enough to not show the outline of your bra
 • keeps its shape throughout the day (and after several washes)
 • retains color evenly after numerous washes
 • looks like a perfect basic — not too memorable or trendy

{related: how to elevate a simple T-shirt}

Furthermore, a work T-shirt should be something designed to be seen — you should be able to take your blazer off during the day without worrying that it’s see-through, clinging to your bra, too low cut, tattered or torn, or otherwise too casual.

Which Business Casual T-Shirts Aren’t Dressy Enough?

Personally, I think any pockets will usually make a tee too casual for a conservative office, as does a wider rib trim at the neckline. I love my relaxed slub T-shirts for the weekend, but I think a slub knit or linen blend would make it too casual for work, as would a pattern like a space-dye.

Finally, while a tank top can be great for certain situations, it isn’t always the best for layering for two reasons. First, it won’t necessarily be appropriate to wear by itself at your office (see our last discussion on whether going sleeveless is professional — know your office!), and second, it may necessitate more laundering and dry-cleaning than a T-shirt would because a T-shirt would cover your armpits and protect the top layer from sweat.

(But: If you want a seamless look and just want to add opacity/raise a neckline, a camisole for work, demi-camisole, or tank top is definitely the look for you.)

What Are the Best Shirts to Wear Under Sweaters?

The Best Layering Tees for Women

If you want to wear an easily washed shirt under a sweater so that your sweater needs less laundering, any of the cotton or jersey sweaters below will work great (especially the ones at the top of this post!). I’m particularly fond of options with lower necklines like scoopnecks or squarenecks because they usually don’t interfere with sweater necklines. (But you should always match the two necklines as closely as possible.)

How to Get That Preppy Layered Look with Sweaters

If you want that preppy layered look with a collar, cuffs, or shirttail hanging out beneath a sweater, we would recommend either going for a silky button-front blouse, a twofer sweater, or a fake collar.

Hunting for great fake collars for layered work outfits? As of Jan. 2024, Amazon has a zillion options for fake shirt collars as well as faux turtlenecks; also check out Etsy seller bloominglace as well as others. On the fancy side of things, it’s hard to beat Lele Sadoughi’s faux collars. (Amazon also has a number of twofer sweaters, with that layered look built in!)

Where to Find Business Casual T-Shirts for Women in Sophisticated Prints

Looking for T-shirts with fun but professional prints for 2024? Some classic brands to check include Ted Baker, Boden, and The Kit. These may be on the more casual side, but also look at Sanctuary, Caslon, and Tommy Bahama.

The Quest for Silk T-Shirts for Work

As of 2024, some of our favorite silky silk T-shirts include Quince, Cuyana, M.M.LaFleur, Amour Vert, and Brooks Brothers, and Reiss. Silk-blend knits are harder to find; LilySilk and J.Crew both have them.

Interesting & Feminine T-Shirts for Work

These no-button styles are all just a little bit different, interesting, and generally fabulous. Some of our latest favorites are below!

collage of 4 women wearing fancier tees you can wear under suits: 1) has draping details, 2) has a wrap detail at waist, 3) has a twist detail at the shoulder, 4) is a cowlneck
As of 2024, some of our favorite fancier tees for under suits include these: one / two / three / four (also this and this). In general, keep an eye out for brands like Boden, CeCe, and Tuckernuck, as well as the smaller workwear designers like the brands pictured above. (Also: J.Jill has a few long-sleeved ones as of Jan. 2024!) Some great fancier sleeveless tops include options from Loveappella and this high-necked option from Amazon.

The Best Opaque T-Shirts for Work Outfits

Hunting for opaque white T-shirts for work? As of 2024, we’d suggest checking the double-layer lines from Boden, Express, Old Navy, and Hobbs, as well as great sources for basic Pima cotton such as L.L.Bean, Uniqlo, Everlane, and Talbots. (This $268 tee also gets great reviews for opacity, and Elizabeth swears by this tee under $30!)

As of 2023, the best spots to check for nude-for-you undergarments are Gap, Old Navy, or Nubian Skin for tons of options — Victoria’s Secret also has a bunch!

The Best Sleeveless T-Shirts for Work

Sleeveless tops can be tricky for work (and you’ll always have to launder your blazers and sweaters LESS if you wear shirts with sleeves). That said, some of our long-standing sleeveless T-shirts and shells for work include these options.

Work-Appropriate T-Shirts: Reader Favorites for Business Casual T-Shirts for Women

The Best Cotton T-Shirt for Work: Everlane

gray scoopneck tee

Everlane makes great basics for work, and this basic cotton scoopneck tee has a sophisticated look. I especially like the elbow sleeves! The top is $40 full price in six colors in sizes XXS-XL at Everlane.

Some of our other favorite professional T-shirts in cotton include some from Caslon, Theory, and J.Crew.

The Best Long-Sleeved Dressy T-Shirt for Women: Banana Republic

woman wears dressy t-shirt for work; her outfit is all black and she is wearing her blazer over her shoulders styled like a cape or robe

Banana Republic’s line of “refined” T-shirts all look great for work. They have a number of shapes, including a shrunken T-shirt, a crewneck T-shirt, and a scoopneck T-shirt, but we like this long-sleeved version as one of the best dressy T-shirts for women.

The Best Business Casual T-Shirt in Plus Sizes: L.L.Bean

pima tops in light blue, illustrated with a skinnier model and a plus-size model

L.L.Bean has long been a reader favorite for substantial, quality cotton T-shirts in plus sizes. The exact styles change from time to time, but the readers sing the praises of the thick material, easy care, and wide variety of colors.

Also keep an eye out at Universal Standard, Eileen Fisher, Ralph Lauren, Talbots, and Amazon Essentials.

The Best Silk T-Shirt for Work: Amour Vert

blouse in pretty print from L'Amour Vert, washable silk popover in black with blue abstract blocks on it

We just did a big roundup of the best silk blouses for work (100% natural fibers can be so hard to find!), but one of our long-standing favorite silk T-shirt blouses for work is the pictured one from Amour Vert. It’s washable silk and comes in a bunch of beautiful prints, and there are notch-neck styles as well as crewneck styles. Love!

Some of our other favorite silky silk T-shirts for work include Quince, Reiss, Cuyana, M.M.LaFleur, and Brooks Brothers. Silk-blend knits are harder to find; LilySilk and J.Crew both have them.

The Best Dressy T-Shirts for Work with a Sophisticated Print: Ted Baker

a dressy t-shirt for work in a sophisticated print from ted baker, shirt shown has swirl of colors including teal, purple, burgundy, and coral

Ted Baker has always made absolutely beautiful dressy T-shirts for work in sophisticated prints. If memory serves, in some years the shirt was a mixed media style with a silky back but jersey front — but the most recent iterations are cut from a soft stretch jersey (95% cotton, 5% elastane). The washing instructions say “dry clean,” which of course means you can machine wash on delicate.

You can find them at Nordstrom as well as TedBaker.com.

Other brands to check include Boden and The Kit. These may be on the more casual side, but also look at Sanctuary, Caslon, and Tommy Bahama.

The Best Sweater T-Shirt for Work Outfits: Quince

woman laughs while wearing a light blue, short-sleeved sweater tee in Mongolian cashmere from Quince

Newer budget brand Quince has been around for a few years, and readers really like their stuff — they’re known for affordable cashmere and silk, as well as affordable but luxe loungewear. This Mongolian cashmere T-shirt is under $50.

Other options include Ann Taylor, J.Crew,* and this Amazon bestseller. (* plus sizes too!)

If you’re hunting for something fancier, check out Kule or The Reset. (Try code CORPORETTE10 for 10% off.) As of 2024, Nordstrom and Anthropologie both have a huge selection of sweater tees.

The Best Dressy Tank Top for Work: Banana Republic

woman wears dressy tank for the office; she wears a white sleeveless tee with beige pants and a brownish blackish belt bag

I can’t remember the last time I saw a true cotton tank top that is dressy enough for an office, but Banana Republic’s sleeveless tee looks perfect. There’s a number of colors, but they all have that incredibly smooth, luxe look to them.

The Best Interesting Work-Appropriate T-Shirt: M.M.LaFleur

professional woman leans against wall; she wears a short-sleeved white top from M.M.LaFleur with draping details and dark green pants.

M.M.LaFleur has had a lot of beautiful pull-over styles in a variety of fabrics — the Nejvi top, pictured above, is in a polyester. (Is it more of a short-sleeve blouse? A polyester tee? It’s a fine line… I’m including it in this roundup because at base it really is just a fancy T-shirt — I think of blouses as having buttons, and popover blouses being a bit more drapey (but maybe that’s me?)).

Other favorites in this category include options from Modern Citizen, Amour Vert, Saint & Sofia, and Spanx. Boden, CeCe, and Tuckernuck all have good options occasionally as well. If you’re looking to splurge, definitely check out The Fold.

The Best Opaque White Tee for Work: Boden

professional woman wears opaque, double-layered v-neck top from Boden; she is lounging on an olive couch next to a navy pillow, and wearing beige pants

There are four ways to find opaque white tees for work…

The first way is to go for brands with double-layer lines — the extra lining in the front makes the top that much more opaque. This tends to be the sleekest, most polished look. Look to brands like Boden, Express, Old Navy, and Hobbs, all of whom have great double-layer lines.

Another option is to go for a thick, quality cotton such as basic Pima tees at L.L.Bean, Uniqlo, Everlane, and Talbots.

The third option is to go for white sweater tees instead of simple T-shirts. Because the fabric is naturally heavier, a knit also tends to be more opaque.

The fourth way is to go from word of mouth. Our morning writer, Elizabeth, called this eco-friendly tee at Amazon one of her favorite low-cost clothing basics, and she calls it her “ride or die” tee for when she wants an opaque white tee. You can find it in relaxed, classic, scoop, and crewneck cuts.

(This $268 tee also gets great reviews for opacity.)

The Best T-Shirt Bodysuit for Work Outfits: Soma

woman wears a work-appropriate t-shirt bodysuit for work with a square-neck and short sleeves

There are a lot of great bodysuits for work right now (they look perfect with wide-leg pants!), but in my opinion a square neck is hard to find and looks especially sleek as a layering option. I like this square-necked bodysuit from Soma, but Everlane and Amazon seller MangoPop also have some that look great.

In general, some of our reliable favorites for minimal work-appropriate bodysuits include EverlaneMangoPop, Soma, Commando, SKIMS, Madewell, and Wolford.

I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below — but readers, which are your favorites?

The Hunt: Where to Find Chanel-Style Jackets for Work https://corporette.com/chanel-style-jackets-for-work/ Tue, 01 Aug 2023 17:10:00 +0000 https://corporette.com/?p=132822

Wondering where to find Chanel-style jackets for work this season? We went on a hunt. (Readers, have you bought any lately that you love?)

The post The Hunt: Where to Find Chanel-Style Jackets for Work appeared first on Corporette.com.

]]>

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

Today I thought we’d go on a hunt for the best Chanel-style jackets for work since there are SO MANY out right now. (Just like oversized blazers — here’s our roundup for the best boyfriend blazers for work!)

After looking around, it’s unusual to see the Chanel-style jackets either clustered at the younger end of things (Express has soooo many, so does Abercrombie & Fitch) — or the designer shops or stores where more established women shop. So which are the best, most stylish — and where can you find Chanel-style jackets for work?

Readers, have you bought any Chanel-style jackets lately that you love?

Our Latest Favorite Chanel-Style Jackets for Work

Some of our latest favorite Chanel-style jackets for work in 2024 include these, but in general check brands like Chanel, St. John, IRO, L’Agence, and Sandro. On the budget side of things, check out Mango, Express, and White House Black Market.

Trendy Chanel-Style Blazers for Work

sdf

Veronica Beard

woman wears black tweed chanel-like jacket

This Veronica Beard tweed blazer has been around for a while in different colorways, but I think it’s especially sleek in the darker colors. It’s an unusual tweed blazer, with patch pockets and buttons on the front of the blazer, almost like a more utilitarian jacket.

You can find it at Neiman Marcus, as well as Nordstrom, for $598-$798.

Mango

A woman wearing a red pocket tweed jacket with a white top and denim trousers

Elizabeth notes, “I can’t take my eyes off this cherry red tweed blazer from Mango. The fabric and shape feel Chanel-inspired, but at a much more accessible price point. I would pair this with some high-waisted navy trousers for a chic office look.”

The blazer is $129.99 at Mango and comes in sizes XS–XXL. It also comes in ecru and black.

J.Crew

A woman wearing a light brown blazer, white top, and blue jeans

Elizabeth notes that she would wear this with a sheath dress for a beautiful, classic look, or styled with some high-waisted pants for a more modern feel.

The jacket is $298 and comes in sizes 000–24. It also comes in “natural” and “pale seascape.”

Ann Taylor

Chanel-style jacket in white tweed

Ann Taylor actually comes in at the MOST affordable today (at least for our featured items) because they’re having a 50% off sale. This classic and elegant braided trim tweed jacket is $179, but is now 50% off with code. It’s available in regular and petite sizes 2-18.

Ann Taylor actually has a bunch of tweed jackets right now, but many are waitlist only right now. (Is that a new feature? I haven’t noticed that before.)

{related: do check out our regularly updated list of wardrobe essentials for work!}

Endless Rose

lavender Chanel-style jacket in cropped tweed

This is probably pushing the limits of “Chanel-inspired jacket” for a number of reasons, but I thought it was interesting because it’s so rare to see a short-sleeved blazer that I would actually describe as cute. Admittedly, it’s especially cute with the cropped, casual look — but maybe for a casual office (and a bodysuit or close-fitting tank underneath) it would work. The tweed jacket is $110 at Express Marketplace from seller Endless Rose (the brand is also carried by Nordstrom). Express actually has a ton of affordable tweed jackets right now.

Other affordable spots with a surplus of tweed jackets right now: White House | Black Market (well, several tweed options, in both regular and petite sizes), Mango (00-3X), and Abercrombie & Fitch. (Nordstrom also carries some Mango pieces, if you prefer their return policy.)

{related: a great blazer alternative: the sweater jacket}

{related: investment/statement blazers}

IRO

Chanel-style jacket in dark burgundy

I’m actually surprised this is so affordable, since I usually think of IRO as being in the $500+ range — but yes, it’s only $380. It’s a cotton-blend boucle, and comes in 5 colors (!), including burgundy (pictured), cappuccino, white, black, and red. It’s available in sizes 2-12 at Saks.

{related: the best blazers to wear as separates}

L’Agence

black Chanel-Style jacket in the NAS

L’Agence is another brand that I think of as having amazing Chanel-like jackets for work — lots of tweed and fringe and other lovely details like sequins. This cropped, double breasted jacket (pictured) is on trend, and slightly hinting at another major trend: very strong shoulders.

{related: how to wear a blazer with something other than a suit}

Chanel

Chanel jacket in fuchsia with a fun trim

So: If you’re looking for Chanel-style jackets, you should probably just look at Chanel itself. This amazing purpley tweed number looks stunning and is from the 2021/22 Métiers d’art Show. It’s pictured with a long skirt with a slit, but I’m guessing if you’re paying almost $8000 for the jacket then it’s in the realm of possibilities for them to customize the skirt for you (for $$$, of course).

You can also get pre-owned Chanel, of course; Farfetch has a number of ones on sale — it’s kind of fun to look at the different styles of Chanel jackets over the years. Love this single-breasted jacket from 1994 ($7479), as well as this tweed trim one from 2010 ($3895).

(The jacket featured on the home page is also Chanel, but the product page is for the vest beneath the jacket… I’ll keep hunting for the product page for the jacket.)

What are your favorite bras for work outfits? How have your bra-wearing habits changed over the past few years, if at all?

The post The Best Bras for Work Outfits appeared first on Corporette.com.

A lot has changed over the past few years, so let’s discuss — what are your favorite bras for work outfits? Which ones are you wearing for comfort; which for every day? Do you wear a different bra (if at all) on days you work at home? If you’ve tried any of the tons of indie lingerie brands out there, which ones have been hits — and which are misses?

For my $.02, these are general guidelines for the bras for work outfits:

The best bra for office wear is unobtrusive — I’ve always preferred simple t-shirt bras, with no seams or lace. (To be honest, seeing seams under my clothing bugs me more than the lace!) Some women would put light padding in the list of requirements for office lingerie, so as to hide any “headlights” — but you do you.

Fit is key! Regarding bras: at no point during the day should you have what I call “the quad boob look” — if your bra is cutting into you so it looks like you have four breasts, odds are good your bra is too tight. (I’ve also recently heard the term “bra hats” to describe bras that are way too big in the band for you, which — LOL — but it’s so true. Hit up a bra store with specialized expertise (I’ve always loved Bra Tenders in NYC), or check out the subreddit, r/ABraThatFits.

Get support from where it matters. Keep in mind that most of your support should be coming from the band, not the straps — know also that if your straps keep falling off your shoulders you can either get them tailored or even buy lingerie just for petite women.

(See more tips regarding fit in our post with style tips for busty women.)

(This is a different post, but regarding panties: yes, your panties can be too tight, and no, it isn’t a good look. Here’s our last discussion on the best no-show women’s underwear.)

Readers, let’s hear from you — what are your favorite bras for work outfits? What are your favorite bras in general these days?

A Few Notes on Special Categories of Bras

{related: how to buy a bra}

The Best Bras for Work Outfits

gray Natori Feathers bra

This one is kind of the OG — a number of readers have noted how much they absolutely adore the Natori Feathers bra, both in terms of how they look in the bra as well as the comfort in wearing the bra. It looks fancy in the picture but it’s generally smooth under clothes, provided it fits properly. They also have a full cup version for larger breasts. It comes in a ton of colors and sizes 30A-42H (sizes 38DD+ are only in the full cup version).

Other best selling bras at Nordstrom include a bunch from Wacoal: Wacoal Awareness, Wacoal Basic Beauty, and the Wacoal Retro Chic bra — each has more than 2000+ glowing reviews.

Another Natori favorite: readers love the Natori Bliss bra and have noted it’s incredibly comfortable. The pictured bralette, in particular, has been a reader favorite over the past few years; they also have an underwire version of it.

Some other options for comfortable bras: True & Co., Natori Pure Luxe, Wacoal, Bravado, Soma. (As a larger-chested woman, I own the last four and think they’re that unusual mix of supportive but comfortable… True & Co. rides up on me, unfortunately, but I keep buying different styles because readers love this thing. You can also get True & Co. at Target, for what it’s worth, sometimes with a “buy 2 for $X” kind of sale. I just bought the Harper Wilde Bliss bra that I’ve heard good things about, but haven’t tried it yet.)

Speaking of larger chest sizes — this Chantelle one has been a best-seller for years; it’s available in sizes 32C-42G. (This Chantelle minimizer is also a best seller, if you’re on the hunt for minimizers.)

Other great bras for larger chest sizes (speaking personally!) include Fantasie, Birdsong, Freya, and Natori. I have a lot of random styles from Elomi that I like a lot, but I don’t think I’ve tried their best-sellers, the Matilda and Cate. (Oh wow – I think they stopped selling it for a few years, but the Le Mystere bra that was Oprah’s favorite long ago is available again.) And of course, if we’re talking about styles for larger-chested women, we have to mention Bravissimo — they sell clothes, swimsuits, and undergarments.

Another huge reader favorite: the Prima Donna Madison, which has been around for 10+ years and how comes in t-shirt styles, bodysuits, plunge bras, balconettes, and more.

Readers, what are your favorite boyfriend blazers of the moment? Are you seeing them both at your office and on the brunch circuit? We rounded up our favorites (and how to wear them).

The post The Hunt: The Best Boyfriend Blazers for Work appeared first on Corporette.com.

collage of four women wearing boyfriend blazers featured below

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

It has been ages since we’ve done a roundup of boyfriend blazers — primarily because it’s been ages since they’ve been in. But it’s one of the must-have trendy pieces of the summer, and so it’s a great piece for both work and play.

The usual way I’m seeing it is worn casually — typically pleated shorts, tiny and/or cropped tank, and a boyfriend blazer. That probably won’t work for most workplaces, but you can adapt it easily — for example, it can become an easy topper for a sheath dress (or even a work-appropriate tank- or t-shirt dress, like this).

Another easy work look with a boyfriend blazer is as a topper for the “column of color” — wear a close-fitting top like a bodysuit or fitted layering tee with pants in a matching shade, and then add the boyfriend blazer on top.

Readers, what are your favorite boyfriend blazers of the moment? Are you seeing them both at your office and on the brunch circuit?

The Best Budget-Friendly Blazers for Women

Hunting for women’s blazers under $50? Our favorites as of 2024 are below — if you’re open to going up to $75, also check out these options from Amazon, J.Crew Factory, Old Navy, and this Uniqlo blazer.

Great Double-Breasted Blazers for Women

Hunting for similar double-breasted pant suits? This Ann Taylor version is really affordable and comes in great basic colors; on the pricier side I really like this asymmetrical Burberry option, and Argent always has classic versions in lots of colors, as does L’Agence (in knits as well as blazers). Some other latest favorites are below:

The Best Boyfriend Blazers for Work: Specific Styles

Amazon / The Drop

woman wears a white boyfriend blazer, white silky camisole, and blue jeans

This first option is $69, and available in sizes XS-5X — and it comes in 6 colors! The all-white-on-top look, as styled here, is another great way to wear this to work. It’s from Amazon’s line, The Drop. If you’re looking for more colors at this price point, this blazer from Amazon is $48, has 27 colors (!) and has a lot of promising buyer-submitted pictures — but it only goes up to size XXL.

Open Edit

woman wears a raspberry pink boyfriend blazer, black trousers and a black bralette

Another great affordable option: this oversized blazer from Open Edit, which comes in a number of colors and fabrics, some with matching bottoms. I love this happy pink. The blazers are around $47-$79, and available in XXS-3X.

Madewell

woman hunches on a chair with one leg up; she wears a peachy windowpane boyfriend blazer with blue jeans

Madewell has 7 colors of this breezy blazer, and it’s mostly on sale — it’s regularly $148, but lots of colors and sizes are marked to $119-$125, plus an extra 30% off with code. Nice! It comes in sizes XXS-4X — I think this peachy windowpane is my favorite of the lot.

Everlane

model wears orangey peach boyfriend blazer with flared white shorts and a cropped white tank

Everlane has a fun “80s blazer,” which comes five colors (including a plaid!). If you want to see a boyfriend blazer styled with bike shorts (!), click here — definitely not for work (IMHO) but if you can make it work in your free time, go for it. The blazer is $180, available in sizes 00-16.

(Also in this price range — and with petite options — is Express, which has a number of boyfriend blazers.)

Favorite Daughter

woman wears black gingham blazer with sleeves rolled up, white crop top and blue jeans

Favorite Daughter is a new brand to me, but they have a bunch of fun blazers at both Anthropologie and Nordstrom. The pictured blazer is $298, and available in sizes XS-XL, at Anthro; Nordstrom has the plaid in two other colors (and they show it over a matching gingham minidress, so NOW you can sing Cake).

Also in this price range: Michael Kors has a bunch of fun boyfriend blazers ($295-$325).

Peter Do

model wears beige boyfriend blazer, black top with a deep V, and white trousers that turn into mesh mid-thigh (no, we don't get it either)

There are a ton of designer options to pick from — including the Rag & Bone blazer that Elizabeth picked for Monday! I think my favorite is this Peter Do blazer, because the styling illustrates another great way to wear it to work, with mixed neutrals and voluminous trousers on the bottom. (I might skip the weird mesh pants, though.) The pictured blazer is $2300 at Neiman Marcus.

Interestingly, some of the higher end blazers are extremely oversized — kind of veering into Talking Heads territory — such as those from Balenciaga, The Row, and Low Classic. Would you ever wear these to work?

Readers, what are your favorite boyfriend blazers for work — and how are you wearing them?

Which camisoles do you have in your rotation, readers? What brands and types are your favorites?

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

Which are your favorite camisoles, readers? We haven’t been on a hunt for these in a while, and I have to say I’m a bit surprised at the huge variety out there, many flavors of which we’ve rounded up below. There are:

 • nude for you camisoles!
 • colorful camisoles!
 • eco-friendly camisoles!
 • cooling camisoles!
 • warming camisoles, to keep the heat in!
 • camisoles with bras
 • shaping camisoles
 • TONS of demi camisoles, widely called “crop camis” now (we did a whole roundup on this a while back — they’re great when you’ve already got other layers on, like a high-waisted Spanx-type thing — or when you don’t want a ton of fabric on, such as on a really hot day.)

Which camisoles do you have in your rotation, readers? What brands and types are your favorites?

Some of Our All-Time Favorite Camisoles

collage of 4 great camisoles for work in a variety of neutral colors

Pictured above, our favorite camisoles for work: one / two / three / four (25+ different color combos in a 4 pack!)– don’t forget about demi-camisoles too, such as this, this or this — or chemisettes!)

It’s slowly getting easier to find eco-friendly underlayers, and H&M’s Conscious line is one of the most affordable ones I know of. This fine knit tank top comes in 4 colors for $9.99, sizes XS-XXL, and contains 55% recycled polyester.

Some other options for eco-friendly camisoles include Boody, Amour Vert, and Girlfriend Collective (although Girlfriend Collective’s tops are more intended as workout tops). These washable silk camisoles from Quince are a bit more expensive but are OEKO-TEX certified and look great.

Is it just me, or are reversible camisoles trickier to find right now than they have been in the past? I like that this one has thicker straps, and like that it comes in three shades of beige/brown (as well as white and black). It’s even available up to size 2X — and it’s $16.50. Nice.

I’ve always preferred white camisoles beneath white blouses, instead of going for a nude-for-me beige — but if you ARE on the hunt for a nude-for-you camisole, Banana Republic’s True Colors line is a great place to start the hunt.

There are a TON of compression/shaping camisoles, of course — this Honeylove one is new to me and looks like it has some interesting, targeted smoothing. (It also promises to offer “underwire-free support”!)

It’s $84, available in sizes S-3X at Nordstrom. Some other options in the compression camisole game include Spanx, Commando, Wolford, and Yummie.

Here’s my $.02, but I’d love to hear what readers say: I think slinky, blousy camisoles like this are better for weekends than for work, even though every single TV show and movie would make you think this is the PERFECT top to wear under a suit or blazer. But if you do that and then remove the top layer, either a) your bra straps are showing, b) you’ve had to wear a strapless bra, or c) you’re not wearing a bra, all of which seem less than ideal for work.

(If you feel like wearing it underneath a blouse or something for opacity, though, by all means go for it!)

If you wildly disagree with me, this 1.State camisole is a more affordable version of the pictured one ($245, Cinq a Sept) — this Halogen camisole is similar but even better because it hides the bra straps.

A Closer Look at The Best Plus-Sized Sweater Jackets

Lands’ End Women’ Plus Size Fine Gauge Cotton Button Front Blazer Sweater

plus-size model wears brown cotton sweater jacket for the office

Lands’ End has had their fleece sweater blazer (below) for a few years but this fine gauge cotton sweater blazer is new. It comes in a bunch of colors (plus sizes 16W-26W) for $105 (full price).

There is some strong praise from one of the reviewers: “I’ve been ordering from Land’s End for more than 30 years but this sweater is my favorite of all time. I’m going to order another one soon just to have in case this one wears out. The style, weight, material, pockets, shape, length is all perfect. I ordered a 2XL, it’s sized perfectly without being snug or baggy.” Nice!

Lauren by Ralph Lauren Plus-Size Combed Cotton Blazer

The Lauren by Ralph Lauren sweater blazer is another classic that has been around for years — Macy’s, Dillards, and Zappos often have a great selection. Again, the product name changes and the exact colors change, but it’s more or less been the same sweater for 10 years.

Nic & Zoe Grace Jacket

This Nic & Zoe sweater jacket is sometimes called the Grace jacket, sometimes the Jogger jacket — it’s a nice thick knit material and has a bit more structure than most sweater jackets, including pockets and shoulder pads.

It’s available in regular, petite, and plus sizes at Bloomingdale’s and sometimes Nordstrom.

Karen Scott Shawl Collar Curved-Hem Cardigan

plus-sized model wears a gray sweater jacket with a shawl collar, a white blouse and black work pants

If you’re looking for something really affordable and comfortable with a lot of polish, this open-front cardigan has been a reader favorite for YEARS. It’s a lot less structured than a lot of sweater blazers and jardigans, but the vibe is the same.

It comes in many colors in regular and plus sizes (and sometimes petites!), and it’s $49-$54 full price. This one goes in and out of stock all the time, especially as it often dips pretty low on sale — all links are good as of Jan. 2024.

Talbots Ribbed Shawl Collar Blazer

woman in shawl collar sweater jacket with thick cable knit and two patch pockets; the sweater jacket is a burgundy, her collared blouse beneath it is pinkish, and she's wearing winter white pants

Talbots is always a great place to look for plus-size sweater jackets, particularly if you prefer plus-size petites, which can be really difficult to find. They change the product name and a few details every year or so, but in general you can find them by searching “sweater blazer.”

(They’re generally $159-$189, but keep an eye out for sales.) While you’re there check out their Charming line for cardigans and Audrey sweaters — both have been reader favorites for years.

Lands’ End Fleece Sweater Blazer

Lands’ End just came out with this fleece sweater blazer recently, so I haven’t tried it yet to see the fit and feel of the fabric. It comes in a TON of sizes in regular, plus size, petite and tall sizes, and it’s currently $39-$89. Nice. They have a longer version too if you prefer something that hits mid-thigh.
